DuBOIS — At 87, John Stuchell of DuBois is still active. What started as a simple pandemic activity turned into him creating 35 YouTube videos and writing a song.
Stuchell, a native of Punxsutawney, was a teacher and superintendent in the Brookville area school district. He retired 32 years ago.
“We didn’t want to just sit and watch TV” during the COVID-19 pandemic, Stuchell said of himself and his son, Kurt.
The YouTube videos, which are about two to three minutes long, were initially about the pandemic, Stuchell said, and some are politics-related.
Stuchell wrote the words and recorded them with a recorder, and Kurt took care of the technical side of things and put the content on YouTube. There are 35 videos, with a total of around 25,000 views. “Bugler’s Call” has the most views, he added.
He didn’t stop there. Stuchell then wrote a song, “More than kissing”, and gave the lyrics to a man named Buck Edwards, who played guitar and sang the melody.
The song is available on Amazon, iTunes, YouTube, Spotify, TikTok and Pandora, Stuchell said. He would like local radio stations to play it too.
Some of the YouTube videos are realistic, and some are far-fetched, Stuchell said. He enjoys taking walks in the past and says doing them can be therapeutic.
Stuchell said he took walks every day, cooked, and enjoyed reading and history.
Another great passion of Stuchell, he said, is sports. He remembers participating in athletics and football at Punxsutawney and enjoys reminiscing. Punxsutawney always played DuBois on Veterans Day, he recalls, and there was no school.
Last year, Stuchell competed at the Keystone Senior Games and was in the 85-89 age group, taking first place in the shot put and first place in the discus, receiving two gold medals. He had also planned to attend the games this year.
Going forward, Stuchell says he’s not sure if he’ll make more videos, but he’d like to write more songs.
Stuchell says his message to other seniors would be to stay active, both mentally and physically, and to stay creative.
“A few of my friends have told me that I am a good example for them,” he says.
